123rd ACS Founder's Day

    Happy Birthday, ACS ........

             ....... from Melbourne!

A group of 42 ACSians together with family members gathered at the Stamford Plaza Hotel in Melbourne on 28 February to celebrate the 123rd birthday of our alma mater.

Dr Suresh John (Year of 1978) kicked off the celebrations by reading a message from Mr Richard Seow, Chairman of the ACS Board of Governors. Tan See Keng (Year of 1979) then led us in the singing of the School Anthem, followed by grace, said by Steven Ng, former teacher of ACS (Independent). Then it was time to tuck in to a delicious buffet dinner consisting of Singapore dishes like chicken curry, sambal egg, etc with sago pudding for dessert.

Several highlights made the evening even more special. Among those present were two Aussie ladies (Merryl and Di) who had been exchange students in ACS Pre-U in 1974. Di had travelled all the way from Adelaide to celebrate with us. We were entertained by a trio (on the saxophone, guitar and bass guitar) made up of two 2nd generation ACSians, Alex, son of Suresh John, Marcus, son of Tay Joo Ann (Year of 1971) and Luke Huels, formerly of ACS (Junior).

Next came a trivia quiz on ACS with questions like “When was ACS founded?”, “Which is the latest addition to the ACS family of schools?” and “What was the nickname the boys gave to Mr Earnest Lau?” The highest score was commendable 7 out of 10!

There was great fellowship among members of the crowd present, which was an increase from last year’s gathering of 30 people. Many were new and young ACSians and the room was filled with voices sharing anecdotes and catching up with what we had been up to since we left school.

Our thanks go to Suresh for organizing the Founder’s Day Dinner yet again and we parted in high spirits expressing ourselves the Aussie way, “See ya later.”
