Terence Chiew's Amazing Feat!
Terence ChiewCongratulations to Terence Chiew, Deputy Dean of Physics at ACS (Independent), who became the first Singaporean to complete the Grand Union Canal Race (GUCR) in May!

The GUCR is a non-stop 232km ‘ultramarathon’ from Gas Street in Birmingham to Little Venice, London along the Grand Union Canal. Participants have a time limit of 45 hours to complete the race which is made more difficult by a maximum of only 30 minutes’ rest at checkpoints spaced about 25km apart. Despite having to battle the 0-2 degrees Celsius frosty night and hours of soreness in the tights and quadriceps, Terence completed the gruelling race in 11th position out of a field of 88 participants in a total time of 34 hours and 32 minutes.

Sharing his experience with us, Terence said, “Completing the race was exceptionally sweet considering that I dropped out from the race due to hypothermia on my first attempt last year. The opportunity to run alongside some of the very best runners from UK, US and other parts of Europe was an excellent experience. The friendship forged during race is also one of the most valuable takeaway."

All this would not be possible if not for the support from Senior Administration and Dr Yong, Dean of Physics. I am sincerely thankful for the support and assistance they offered in every other way”, he added.
