Touching Lives & Making A Difference

Time and again, those who have passed through the portals of ACS would gloat over their wonderful teachers whenever they meet. And justifiably so, for they would not be what they are today if not for their teachers who touched and made a difference in their lives.

But how many have ever wondered where and how their beloved teachers are today? Perhaps only a few. And even if they did, they would probably assume that their teachers are now happily retired and surrounded by their families at home.

Unfortunately, this is not so according to Mr Wan Fook Weng, the former Principal of ACJC. By chance, he recently discovered that there are a few retired teachers who live alone and need financial and emotional support.

I recently visited a retired teacher who, without any income and family support, lives alone in a one-room rented flat for the elderly. Together with one of my former students, we spent time with him, talked to him, and took him out to the food court and supermarket. It was apparent that he was so delighted with our company and that got me thinking that something should be done for retired teachers who are in a similar situation. The issue here is not finance, but rather social and emotional support for these retired teachers”, Mr Wan said.

Since that visit, Mr Wan and a group of old boys and old girls have arranged two lunch outings for retired teachers. The first was held on Chinese New Year’s Eve and the second during the Holy Week of Easter. Both lunches were held at New Ubin Seafood which is owned by ACS old boy, Pang Seng Meng (Class of 1971), who also kindly hosted the second gathering.

The joy and enthusiasm at the second lunch were electric. I was so pleased that we found the winning formula for social interaction among our retired teachers. The response is most encouraging and has spurred us to finalise plans for a third outing on 26 May”, Mr Wan added.

As resources are needed for the financing and logistics of the lunch outings, a group of old boys and old girls have already responded to Mr Wan’s call for volunteers. If you wish to come on board to volunteer, please contact Mr Wan (c/o 502 Sixth Avenue, Singapore 276586) or Mr Timothy Chew (c/o peltfly@ gmail.com). And if you know of any former teacher or staff member who may need financial assistance, please contact the OBA which will see how best it can help.

As our beloved teachers had done for us, let us now touch their lives and make a difference for them. Let us be a fountain of joy and hope for them in the autumn of their lives”, Mr Wan said.
