A Reunion of Sorts!

The ACS Class of 59’s monthly lunch on 29 March turned out to be a reunion of sorts at The Tanglin Club, where the guest-of-honour was the former ACS teacher, the Rev Peter S. T. Lim. Several other ACSians happened to be at the same lunch venue and they too had the opportunity to catch up with Rev Lim; they included Mr Cecil Wong (former ACS OBA President, 1958 - 1960), Mr Wan Fook Weng (former Principal of ACJC), Norman Wee (ACS Class of 57) and Lee Liat Cheng (ACS Class of 60).

Rev Lim, who will be turning ninety this year, joined ACS as a teacher in 1950. When we asked him whether he also had his school education in ACS, he responded in his distinctive crisp and resonating voice, “I would have, but I was enrolled in the wrong school!”

According to him, his mother wanted to enroll him in ACS but the rickshaw man who was supposed to take them to Fort Canning where ACS was then, took them to Pearls Hill Primary School instead. “In Hokkien, Fort Canning (ong kay sua) and Pearls Hill (chim choo sua) sound somewhat similar and that was how the mistake occurred”, he elaborated with a smile.

But as fate would have it, Rev Lim ended up in ACS where he is well remembered for his contributions as the founder the school’s 12th Company Boys’ Brigade in 1954; he was also one of the pioneers and the first Pastor of Barker Road Methodist Church, and one of the prime movers who successfully sought autonomy for the Methodist Church in Malaya and Singapore in 1968.

After a spell as Principal of ACS Seremban, Malaysia (1961-65), Rev Lim joined the University of Singapore where he played a key role in fund raising and held several senior management positions before retiring in 1996. He now resides in Edmonton, Canada.
