Benson Puah takes over the ACS OBA helm

At the ACS Old Boys' Association (ACS OBA) Annual General Meeting on 28 March 2008, Mr. Benson Puah was returned unapposed to take over from Dr. Ang Peng Tiam as President of the ACS OBA Management Committee 2008-09.

In his parting speech, Dr. Ang paid tribute to Mr. Tan Wah Thong, the outgoing Chairman of the ACS Board of Governors (ACS BOG) and thanked him for his support of the ACS OBA’s ONE ACS vision.

He said that with Mr. Tan at the helm of the ACS BOG, we have seen major changes in our schools – leadership changes, improvements in academic results and redevelopment of our school campuses.

Dr. Ang’s final duty before stepping down as President was to present each Principal with an “Affirmation of ONE ACS Vision” plaque. The Affirmation was the result of some brain storming by all the academic staff from the six schools at the first ONE ACS Staff Retreat held earlier this year.

The ONE ACS initiative is an important and timely one as it serves to unite the ACS family of schools which has grown considerably over the years.

According to Mr. Puah, the new President, “Each passing year, more and more ACS boys and girls join the world community, hopefully to contribute to it meaningfully. What is the make up of the present day ACS boy or girl? Each of us has a certain recollection and belief of what that means, as we were each groomed by that particular environment and circumstance of our time. But those conditions have not remained the same. It evolves continually with our society’s changing needs and priorities”.

Mr. Puah reckons that the challenge for the OBA is to attract more younger old boys and girls to come forward to join and better still, to step up to serve so that the OBA can truly represent our growing diverse profile of old ACS boys and girls.

He said that: “ONE ACS is the coming together of our schools as one, different as they may now be. For those of us who have benefitted from our years at ACS, we know how crucial those formative years were to us. Now is a good a time to get involved and engaged through the OBA to help us with our Board of Governors and our schools make ONE ACS a reality".
