ACS OBA President's Reflections - 2015

Cheo Chai Hong A blessed 2016 to all. As we look forward to the 130th anniversary of our alma mater this year, it is with deep gratitude that I reflect on the year just past. Together with the ACS OBA Management Committee and the ACS Community, we have had a wonderful 2015.

We hope to see you at the Founder’s Day Dinner on Tuesday, March 1st at the Island Ballroom, Shangri-la Hotel to celebrate our Hearts, Hopes and Aims. Tables can be purchased through our administrator, Ms Dorothy Sim at ACS OBA office at events@acsoba.net / 6259-7860.

Here are some highlights of 2015:

Past vs Present Games (28 Feb'15)
Past vs Present Games 2015Held at the ACJC and ACS (Independent) campuses, our Old Boys turned up in full force to face the friendly competition of our current students.
Despite the expanding waistlines and receding hairlines, we still managed to turn back the clock to retain the Ang Peng Tiam Challenge trophy for another year! With the exception of Soccer, the rest of the sports were won by the Past teams as technique and experience trumped the youthful exuberance of the Present teams. GO Old Boys!

ACS 129th Founder’s Day Dinner (1 Mar'15)
Founder's Day Dinner 2015The 129th ACS Founder’s Day Dinner was held at Orchard Hotel and more than 1,000 graced the occasion to celebrate God’s abundant blessings upon ACS. As the celebration was in the midst of Chinese New Year, Master-of-Ceremony Mr Morgan Zhou, Vice-Principal of ACS (Junior) led the guest through the “Lo Hei” in Mandarin, debunking the myth that ACS boys are, well, less proficient in Mandarin.

The One ACS Career Forum 2015 (1 Aug'15)
The ACS OBA hosted the annual ONE ACS Career Forum at ACS (Independent) for the students, parents and alumni of the ACS family and the Methodist Girls’ School. This was the 4th time the OBA is organizing this event and it has been inspiring to see it grow in both breadth & depth.

Panel Speakers at the ONE ACS Career Forum 2015In 2012, we had 4 sessions and 16 speakers. In 2013, we had 5 simultaneous sessions over 3 time slots to give students greater choice and increase the interface with the speakers in smaller and more focused interest groups. Last year, we introduced a C-suite panel to give students some insight into the thoughts of industry leaders. This year, we expanded the format even further to welcome almost 60 alumni speakers spread over 13 different disciplines and invited 7 local tertiary institutions- NTU, NUS, SIT, SMU, SUTD, and Yale-NUS to speak to students about admissions criteria.

The presence of local tertiary institutions also enhanced the overall experience of the Forum. Participants were given the opportunity to engage with the representatives on such topics as academic modules offered, career options, and the criteria for different careers, in addition to clarifying queries on application and selection requirements.

Retired Teachers’ Tribute Dinner (1 Sep'15)
Retired Teachers Dinner 2015The OBA organises this event annually on 1st September, in recognition of the hard work put in by our former teachers of the various ACS schools. This year was especially poignant as we joined Singapore in celebrating SG50 and showing recognition to the many pioneer educators amongst us.

Approximately 80 teachers turned up to celebrate the occasion which was graced by our retired principals and vice principals such as Mr Wan Fook Weng, Mr Peter Joe Chia, Mr Lim Keng Boon, Mr Wee Kim Cheng and Ms Gladys Chia, as well as Class of 56's Reunionrepresentatives from the ACS Board of Governors. Our guests spent the evening mingling to reminisce and exchange fond memories as well as to share with each other their latest pursuits. The event was rounded off by a rousing rendition of the school anthem, and a group photo-taking of retired teachers and Old Boys present.

In between, our ACS class years have been active with their own reunions, and our ACS schools have never been busier. Click here for more Alumni News and please contact us if you have reports and photos to share.

A blessed 2016 to you from all of us on the ACS OBA Management Committee.

The Best Is Yet To Be!

Kind regards,

Cheo Chai Hong
President,
Anglo-Chinese School Old Boys’ Association
