What was your fondest memory of
your days in ACPS?

KL: I must say hide-and-seek games
during recess every day. When we ran
out of places to hide, we got creative and
started hiding in the servants’ quarters,
much to their displeasure!

														GS: The PE lessons at Fort Canning Park;
we always end up catching all kinds of
insects and small creatures! The char kway
teow at the canteen was especially good;
the aunty would serve fried eggs five
minutes just before the recess bell rang.

KH: I remember the day when a few of us
decided to explore the servants’ quarters
behind the bookstore. Without knowing
what it was, we proceeded up the stairs,
only to be caught up in a game of hideand-
seek with the school attendants.

What motivated you to return to ACS to
teach?

KL: Even before I entered NIE, I had already
made up my mind to return to my alma
mater. Teaching was my way of giving back
to the school.

GS: I made many friends in ACPS whom I
am still in contact with. My son will be in
Primary One soon and I hope that he too will
enjoy the same experiences as I did.

KH: I was looking forward to working
alongside my teachers, to learn from them
how to be a good teacher. ACPS was my
school and now my workplace. I hope to
contribute to the school for as long as I can.

Was there a teacher that inspired you to
join the profession?

KL: Mrs Mabel Chee, my P1 and P2 form
teacher, known then as Miss Wee. She was
very caring, patient and she taught us well.
When I came back to school, she became
my colleague! She is one teacher I will
always remember.

GS: Mdm Gladys Chia. When I was her
pupil, she gave me some good advice that
I still remember. She encouraged us to give
our best from the start of the race and not
to scramble only at the end. She taught us
the importance of planning what we want to
achieve from the start and to finish the race
strongly. I have been living with these words
in mind ever since.

KH: Mrs Mabel Chee, Ms Lee Kam Har
and Mr Kelvin Lim are examples of teachers
who have made me realise that teaching is a
noble profession. My principal and teachers
from ACS (Barker) then also played a big
part. Mr Ng Eng Chin was one of the most
hands-on principals that I have known. He
truly inspired me to become a better person. |
