PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Parent Volunteers - Our Schools' Most Faithful Partners

Throughout the years, ACS has been blessed by parent volunteers who contribute so much of their time, energy and resources to many of the school’s programmes that take learning beyond the classroom

Mrs Xynde Lim and her familyACS (Barker Road) PSG Food Ministry: Food from the heart.

Mrs Xynde Lim joined the ACS (Barker Road) Parent Support Group (PSG) early in 2009 and by the Grace of God, was given the opportunity to serve in the Food Ministry, providing home-cooked food and sharing the warmth of fellowship with the gentlemen of ACS (Barker Road).

The Food Ministry was started by a group of willing parents seven years ago who wanted to feed our boys with both earthly and spiritual nourishment. After their long stint at the helm, Xynde, together with a group of dedicated mothers, took over the Ministry. Despite the strong foundations laid down by their predecessors, it was a monumental task that awaited their leadership. They had to ensure there was sufficient food for the 1,350 students, enough variety and healthy options in the menu and sufficient time for the students to collect their food and eat properly. They also had to look into the preparation of Muslim food and vegetarian food to meet the needs of the various groups of students. At any point in time during the Food Ministry, eight counters would be opened so that the boys can collect the food in the shortest time and return for desserts.

A time of bonding for parent volunteers.Other challenges faced by the Food Ministry include the lack of manpower and funds. Fortunately, due to Xynde’s previous background in food and beverage, she is able to order the ingredients at low cost from the suppliers. The menus are simple, but the cooking requires the precision of a military operation. On the average, every parent volunteer needs to boil 5-10 packs of pasta and cook a tin of spaghetti sauce. Other parent volunteers are tasked to prepare chicken nuggets, cook fried rice, bake
brownies etc… They have to ensure that each parent volunteer is not overloaded, over worked or over stressed.

At the heart of their dedication and commitment is the belief that the most important ingredient in the food is LOVE. With this special ingredient, one does not need to be a professional chef to produce delicious food. If our gentlemen are served with a willing and loving heart, they will feel the warmth and the want to serve others with love too.

When asked why she does this, the reply invariably will be, “ The satisfied smiles on the boys’ faces and their heartfelt thanks gives us the encouragement to persevere. This is a group of boys who will live up to the motto that ‘The Best is Yet To Be’. We believe strongly in them."

All thanks be to God, who will always provide us with His bountiful blessings.
