Tyres, Wheels and Old School Ties

When driving your children to ACS (Barker Road), one cannot help but notice the Stamford Tyres’ Tyre Mart in the Caltex service station along Durnearn Road, just before the turning into Barker Road. When you step into this one-stop automotive convenience store, you will be pleasantly surprised and be impressed by the wide range of tyres, rims and batteries.

Apart from their close proximity, Stamford Tyres and ACS have other things in common.

To start with, both have a rich heritage. Stamford Tyres had its humble beginnings in the 1930s when it operated a tyre retail and petrol kiosk along Stamford Road.

Today, it has grown into a global distribution and retail network, with operations around the world. In Singapore, its chain of five conveniently located One-Stop Auto Service Centres and four techno-logically advanced Tyre Marts offer motorists products and services under one roof at competitive prices.

Secondly, both believe that “The Best is Yet to Be!” In its continual efforts to ensure that customers receive consistent top class service, Stamford Tyres has invested much in the training and upgrading of workers’ skills. It also has a team of highly experienced in-house experts to provide professional solutions to customers.

Thirdly, the close links between Stamford Tyres and ACS cannot be ignored. Sitting on Stamford Tyres’ Board of Directors are four former ACSians: Mrs. Dawn Wee, Dr. Kwok Weng Fai, Mr. Tay Puan Siong and Mr. Sam Chong Keen.

Take your time and select from a wide range of wheels.

Mrs. Dawn Wee (Executive Vice President) remembers her old school days in ACS well. “I was known as Dawn Kwok then. The ACS connection runs deep in my family. My father, the late Mr. Kwok Ah Lou was an ACSian (1930s), so was my brother Dr Kwok Weng Fai (1947-1959), my uncles (the late Dr. Seah Cheng Siew & Mr. Seah Cheng Suan) and all my male cousins. In fact, my maternal grandfather, the late Mr. Seah Eck Jim was the architect for the old school blocks in Coleman Street and Barker Road”.

“The transition in my schooling from MGS Mount Sophia to ACS Barker was most exciting – Boys… Yippee! The 2 years in ACS Barker was enriching not only in the education I received, but also the friendships I made”, Mrs. Wee added.

Stamford Tyres has grown significantly beyond its reputation as Singapore’s “Tyre King”. Today, it is known as “Singapore’s Best” automotive service centre.

Apart from just well known tyre brands such as Falken, Continental, Firenza and Sumo, Stamford Tyres also offers wheel brands such as 5 Zigen Rays, Momo, Leon Hardiritt, Hamann, BBS and TSW, Fiamm batteries and a range of performance parts and racing accessories such as Project Mew and Espelir. It also offers a host of service and maintenance packages to cater for the varied needs of customers. Its massive Jurong Retail Centre, which is capable of handling 20 cars at a time, has the latest fully computerized diagnostic equipment such as the automated high speed balancing, computerized wheel alignment, nitrogen tyre inflation systems and auto transmission fluid flushing.

Stamford Tyres has come a long way since its humble beginnings, and is certainly not resting on its laurels. It plans to move in tandem with the times and will continually source and introduce new products to meet the ever-changing needs of discerning customer. When opportunities arise, such as the proposed high performance wheel plant to produce its own proprietary light alloy Stamford Sports Wheels, made in accordance to international quality standards VIA and JWL, it will move accordingly.
