Alumni  Roundup

07 February 2005 was a great evening of fun and camaraderie for the ACS Class of 75 (O level) as they celebrated their 30th Anniversary at the Oldham Hall Dining Hall.

A huge banner prominently displayed on the top floor of the Oldham Hall welcomed the turnout of 106 old boys and 15 teachers, which was indeed creditable given that 07 February was the eve of the Chinese New Year’s Eve.

For many, it was a nostalgic "back to school" experience and also the opportunity to inspect the new ACS Barker Road Campus. Many also agreed with the prudent choice of venue; instead of splurging on a posh private function hall, the savings in rental meant that the organizing committee could raise more funds for the ACS OBA Teachers’ Welfare Fund. In fact, with the alma mater in mind and to encourage other cohorts to use the Oldham Hall for their reunion dinners, funds could be further raised by ‘renting’ the huge banner, designed in such a way that crucial details can be easily changed.

Over dinner, representatives from the classes reminisced over the years of growing up in ACS, providing interesting anecdotes of altercations with teachers and fellow students. Mr. Earnest Lau and Mr. Lim Choon Mong also gave an insight to what it was like teaching and managing our cohort.

What stood out during the evening was the camaraderie and humility displayed by the cohorts of 75. Everyone mingled and chatted the evening away, no matter who they are, where they are from, or what they have accomplished. We had in our midst people from all walks of life; salespeople in cars, real estate, insurance, financial services, software, hardware, advertising, luxury watches, medical services, and the list goes on. We had missionaries, pastors, semi retirees, doctors, welfare workers, social workers, lawyers, military people, managers, etc. We even had construction workers and senior government officials and administrators – yet there were no titles or fame on display and no badges or medals to flaunt. It was truly a night of fun and friendship. There was even a tongue-in-cheek ceremony where ‘awards’ were dished out for earliest bird, latest bird, checks in the mail, best class organizer, etc.

The organizers were most touched by the generosity of cohort members. We had friends who could not attend the dinner but sent cheques because they wanted to contribute to the Fund. Some paid for their fellow schoolmates knowing that they could not afford to come. Others who paid but for some reason could not turn up insisted that no refund be given and that the Fund should benefit. And there were also some who went out of their way to pay for others who were overseas without a thought that attendance was not a given.

That night, we moved back 30 years and felt what friendship in ACS meant. Whilst we caught up with each other, laughed and talked, we also paid a silent tribute to those who have passed on, sadly a little too prematurely. Many true and interesting stories were exchanged. One cohort almost died serving in the mission field; another took home teenage runaways to care for them, while yet another handled challenging school children. We all know who they are. And of course we have our prominent business leaders, top administrators, and famed personalities. But because we were ACS boys, we were taught fit that it is To God Be The Glory. Not to our glory because we do not want our earthly praises.

In this rather anonymous write up where no names are mentioned and no accolades given, we felt it appropriate that the True ACS Spirit is the one that manifests the words from the School Anthem that we be "Beacons of Truth and Light". And we are doubly comforted by the words of Jesus in Matthew 23:11 - "The greatest among you will be your servant."
